How many times have you been using your PC and it’s suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason – right in the middle of an important document?

You press Control, Alt and Delete, with that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach telling you that you’re going to lose everything you’ve just spent ages typing.

How often have you been on the internet and it freezes for the umpteenth time that day and you have to turn it all off and start all over again

Why is it that computers, like cars, NEVER, EVER break down at a convenient time, but always when you really, really need them?

I’m sure you recognise all too well the frustration when a machine that you expect to work suddenly decides that it’s had enough and refuses to work any more.

And when you can’t use your computer, you realise just how much

You also know that getting it fixed is going to be expensive.  Even if you can get away with a technician fixing it within the first hour, you’re looking at handing over at least $25, probably nearer $30 – or more.  And all he (or she) seemed to do was press a few buttons.

If he has to take it away with him, you just KNOW that you’ve given him an open check book.

“But what can I do about it?”  I hear you wail in anguish.  “I don’t know the first thing about computers”.

Well this is where I come in.  I DO know about computers – in fact I’m a PC technician – yes, I go to peoples’ homes and rescue them from the despair and panic caused by a blank screen and a lost, but vital, document.

I’ve been working in and on PCs almost since they first appeared in the late 1970s.  Over the years I’ve noticed that most problems I’ve been called out to are generally the same sorts of problems that raise their irritating heads over and over again. 

When you buy something new, you get a manual telling you how to work it, and what to do when things go wrong.  So why isn’t there a book telling you how to fix computer problems? 

I’ll tell you why.  Because a whole new trade has developed around repairing and fixing computers, with the technicians keeping their secrets to themselves, and able to charge a lot of money for their knowledge. 

After all, are you going to argue if a technician says that your vitally important computer has suffered a catastrophe and needs urgent and extensive repairs?  Of course not.  You just want it to work again.  When the technician brings it back a couple of days later, and it works, you’re just so happy you pay her whatever she asks for. 

The secrets most technicians don’t want you to know

As an experienced technician, I understand that most people don’t have a clue about computers and how they work – they just want to sit in front of the wretched thing and use it. And when it inevitably plays up they want some simple fixes with a good chance of making it work properly again, for little or no cost.

As most sick computers have the same common problems, and I can only work part-time fixing sick PCs, I started teaching my customers the basics, so they could try some simple fixes before they called me out. 

Having written out the instructions several times for different people, I started getting calls from happy customers who DIDN’T need me.  They told me that when their PC went wrong, they followed my instructions, and fixed it themselves without me! 

They were delighted – and so was I. 

 And then my customers’ friends started calling me, asking me how to fix certain problems.  That was when I had the idea of writing a book to cover all the most common problems.  Not so much “if this happens again, what should I do?” so much as “what else could go wrong, and what can I do to fix or even prevent it?”

I wrote out all the fixes for common problems that I used for Windows 3.1, then Windows 95 and later, Windows 98.  I asked my most regular customers to follow the instructions as and when they had a problem with their PC, then give me feedback.

I then offered the completed book to all my customers, and via mail-order, as an insurance policy against future problems.  The result was astounding!  So many people took me up on my offer, and were even buying it for friends and family.

Now updated for VISTA users!   I've updated this reference guide to include a section on Windows VISTA.  Although this is still a new operating system, all computers can (and will!) develop problems, and the solutions may be slightly different for Vista, although the principles remain the same.   So I've included differences that I've discovered Vista users are already having, to save you time and effort ironing out these little annoyances.
